Sage Smudging 101
What it is, why I’m obsessed with it, and why you need it in your life.
I believe daily rituals are imperative to have if living a live in alignment is important to you. And sage smudging is one of my favourites that I've been doing for years.
So what’s the big deal with smudging and why do I think you’d benefit from it?⠀
Have you ever wanted to take a shower after interacting with a person or place?! The vibe was off, gave you the Heebie-jeebies and you can’t quite “shake it.”⠀You know that icky feeling? Or maybe you experienced times where you felt really scattered, stressed and tense and found it difficult to unwind.
If a lightbulb is going off, using sage to smudge might be just the thing you need to start doing ASAP.⠀
How it effects your vibe:
Using sage(which is a dried herb) to Smudge yourself, home, space and office is like an energetic shower or cleanse. It gets rid of low vibrational frequencies/ negative energy that can bring you down- mentally, energetically, emotionally and physically. Cuz’ nobody has time for that.⠀
⠀
It’s not just a bunch of woo-woo:
For you skeptics, there’s science to back it up. Research shows that the smoke from dried sage actually changes the ionic composition of the air, has various health benefits and can even reduce our stress response.
⠀
Where did smudging originate from and how does it make you feel:
It’s a shamanic rooted ritual and I find it always leaves me feeling more grounded, light, creative, intuitive, clear and of course, aligned.
When should you do it:
Doing it once a day when you get home from work is a great way to re-set your energy( gosh knows what you might have picked up). Other times that I recommend saging yourself is after being in a big crowd/ argument/or an event, after interacting with a place or person that leaves you feeling “off” or if you’re feeling really tense, stressed and can’t get out of your own head. It’s also good to sage yourself If you’re moving into a new home, office, or work space. And if you’re a moon lover like me, try saging in the evenings during the new and full moon.
⠀
How to to sage yourself:
First set an intention for yourself to cleanse your vibes or connect with spirit. Carefully light the tip of your sage stick ( or whatever herb of choice) over a fire proof dish, until it starts to smoke. Once the sage is burning nicely, starting on the left side, direct the smoke towards the bottom of your feet, working your way up the body to the top of your head and then moving back down along the right side, finishing at the bottom of your feet. Do your best to waft the smoke behind you and try to get all parts of your body covered. When complete, re-state your intention.
You can use others herbs instead of sage:
Palo santo, lavender, cedarwood, and sweet grass are other magical options to smudge with. Whatever scent resonates with your the most, trust it! That’s your intuition talking.
